Odd's Mediocre Blogs: Vegeta VS Kaiba (Dragon Ball VS Yu-Gi-Oh!)
"Pride that you express to others is ego. Pride that you express silently to yourself is real pride."
- Stuart Wilde
Vegeta, the prince of all Saiyans and eternal rival to Goku.
Seto Kaiba, the CEO of KaibaCorp and forever rival to Yugi Muto.
The Shonen rival. A staple archetype of the genre that these two embody into their soul. Their drive and ego all depends on if they can surpass the protagonist, of course they did realize that there was more than that, they had those they held close, but even after becoming better people, there will always be that drive to be better, that pride in themselves that no matter what our hero does, they will be right behind them, always there to prove themself.
Will the Saiyan of royal blood defeat the one who would sacrifice God? Or will the president of KaibaCorp bring down the one who had evolved beyond gods? We'll find out, in a DEATH BATTLE!
Before we Start...
Hi, Odd here! I really like Vegeta VS Kaiba. I'll get into it later but it's by far my favorite Vegeta matchup and while I do prefer Kaiba VS Kamen Rider Genm, this is easily a close second. While it does mainly focus on Vegeta and Kaiba being the rivals of the series, I'd argue that's one of the most important aspects to their characters, their ego and pride, always trying to be better than Goku and Yugi. Vegeta literally says after the Cell Saga once Goku wants to stay dead that he'll never fight again, and in Season 4, Kaiba literally flips out when he finds out that the undefeatable King of Games lost a duel. Yeah we've had plenty of Shonen rivals, but none that ever embody it like these two, and that's a big aspect of the matchup that I like. But enough about that, what are we including?
For Vegeta, pretty much what you expect. Dragon Ball, Z, the anime and manga of Super, and the new edition of Daima. Toei feats will also be used. There is the recent statement by Toyotaro that he considered everything canon and that canon is what you make it to be (which just so happened to come out in the middle of me making this blog), but ultimately I don't think this really changes much on what I feel should be included as I personally feel GT and Heroes are a bit too unconnected to be included.
For Kaiba, we get a little more complicated. Despite the many differences between the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime and manga, both are equally canon and as such will both be used, as well as any closely tied media like several of the video games or Yu-Gi-Oh! R. The live VA scripted Duels held at official Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments (both the English TCG and Japanese OCG) will be counted so anything Kaiba gets from those will be also used. While it can be argued that those are non-canon, they don't contradict anything, at least the ones with Kaiba. If you see anything weird in his Decklist, it's probably from supplemental material like the games or live duels.
But speaking of official Yu-Gi-Oh, the cards Kaiba uses will primarily use their anime effects rather than those in real life. In cases where Kaiba uses a card as both it's anime effect and real life effect, I will give him both.
Also, while the question of how card effects work in a fight like this will be answered later [See Before the Verdict], I'd like to refer to the official Yu-Gi-Oh! Rulebook for at least a general broad understanding of Duel Monsters.

One last thing, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the creators of these two, Akira Toriyama and Kazuki Takahashi, may they rest in peace and may the worlds they left behind be remembered forever.
Background
Vegeta
"You say I'm arrogant, I say damn right. That's pride. Pride in the Saiyan I am. The mighty prince of the ultimate warrior race!"
Across the stars and the cosmos, there were the mighty Saiyans, a warrior race that wanted nothing but to fight, kill, and terrorize. These Saiyans had a royal bloodline in the form of the Vegeta Family. In the room housing the most powerful, elite class Saiyans held the current King Vegeta's child, the mighty prince Vegeta.
Unfortunately for the Saiyans, their time was cut short. The mighty Lord Frieza that ruled them under an iron fist feared the legend of the Super Saiyan, and so, rather than deal this legend potentially manifesting, he annihilated the entire Saiyan race, including the King. The only survivors were the ones who stuck around on other planets, such as the prince. Frieza had told these Saiyans that the planet had been destroyed by a meteor. With nothing left to go back to, Vegeta was forcibly put under Frieza's rule, no more planet, no more heritage, no more race. The only thing Vegeta could cling to, was his pride.
This would all change when Vegeta and his partner Nappa arrived on Earth after another Saiyan, Raditz was killed and his scouter picked up information on wish granting Dragon Balls (that latter part being what Vegeta actually cared about) that Vegeta could use to wish for immortality. Despite killing many of his friends, Vegeta was ultimately defeated and yet spared by the Saiyan who would forever more be his rival; Kakarot. Having learned that Frieza had heard from the scouters about the Dragon Balls as well, and was heading to a planet with another set, Vegeta quickly arrived, and after a long series of events of heroes, Frieza's men and Vegeta killing those men (and a town of Namekians), he came face to face with Frieza. After all of his struggles and power ups, Vegeta assumed himself to be the legendary Super Saiyan, unfortunately for him, Frieza would remind Vegeta that the Super Saiyan was just a legend. On his death bed, with Kakarot the last one left to fight, Vegeta entrusted the will of the Saiyans on his rival, before dying. From then on, Vegeta's rival would fight Frieza, become the legendary Super Saiyan himself, and avenge his people.
However, this obviously wouldn't be the end of Vegeta. The Dragon Balls would bring back to life anew, from then on, he'd come to Earth, train, have a kid, and fight against some killer androids, leading to him too acquiring the legendary Super Saiyan form. This would conclude with Kakarot dying, and this time choosing to stay dead for good. Without a worthy rival to Vegeta to rise to, Vegeta swore that he'd never fight again, and for seven years, he didn't, only training his son.
And then... he'd return. His rival. Finally, a chance at a proper fight, after training and getting even stronger. But then everything kept getting in the way. This Supreme Kai, this wizard Babidi, and worst of all, his rival had already surpassed him, and before he even got to fight him. None of it mattered anymore to Vegeta, he just needed to be stronger, and so he let the evil wizard Babidi awaken his evil, to become a slave. But Vegeta wasn't a slave, he wasn't evil, he really did love his family, and Vegeta knew it. So, in order to protect them, Vegeta would sacrifice his life, doing the first selfless thing in his entire life.
From then on Vegeta would come back, fighting Majin Buu in a battle for the universe as one of the last people left, and as he saw his rival fight Majin Buu, Vegeta truly realized what separated them. He realized that Goku, was number one.
Even after, Vegeta would strive to get stronger and stronger in his own way, as a loving father and protector of Earth, whether it be against a God of Destruction, an evil version of Goku, or a magic goat wizard that could drain whole planets, Vegeta would always rise up, as a proud warrior.
Seto Kaiba
"You said tech has its limits. Wrong. There are no limits when you're as brilliant as Seto Kaiba."
It was at only a young age when the life of Seto and his younger brother Mokuba would change forever. With their parents dead and their relatives having taken everything from them, they ended up at an orphanage, often playing games such as chess, Seto would keep Mokuba safe in the orphanage, making sure that he'd only be adopted if him and his brother were adopted together.
One day, the current CEO of KaibaCorp, Gozaburo Kaiba, had visited the orphanage, whether as a publicity stunt or to adopt an heir. Seto took the opportunity to challenge Gozaburo to a game of chess, claiming that if he won, Gozaburo would have to adopt both Seto and Mokuba. Despite initially dismissing the challenge, Gozaburo accepted, lost, and then adopted the two into the Kaiba family.
The now Seto Kaiba was forced into harsh economics and rigorous training to become the next heir of KaibaCorp. Unfortunately for Gozaburo, Seto Kaiba was not his pawn.
In the anime continuity, Kaiba wanted to build an amusement park for everyone once he became CEO, where orphans get in free, however Gozaburo fiercely rejected the idea. Later, Kaiba invented a virtual software for playing games, but Gozaburo wanted to use it for war, from then on Kaiba would oppose his father, attempting to stop him from killing countless and profiting off it. Kaiba (with the help of Mokuba) would obtain 51% of KaibaCorp, becoming the new CEO and stopping Gozaburo's plans for war.
Regardless of how Kaiba took over KaibaCorp, upon defeat Gozaburo would commit suicide, teaching Kaiba a lesson that "to lose means to die."
Later on, he'd discover someone with the mythical Blue-Eyes White Dragon, a card with only 4 copies known to exist, this person was Solomon Moto, the grandpa of Yugi Muto. With Kaiba having three other copies of the card, he wished to obtain the fourth, but Yugi's grandpa denied him. So, Kaiba decided he'd just take it from him another way, ripping it up. Unfortunately for him, the spirit of the Millennium Puzzle would manifest and defeat Kaiba, inflicting him with a "Mind Crush" that would destroy his evil side.
From then on, Kaiba would restart and began doing things his own way, creating holographic vision for the Duel Monsters cards, and taking part of Maximillion Pegasus' tournament in order to rescue his brother. Kaiba would eventually create his own tournament, obtain the power of the Egyptian God card Obelisk the Tormentor, and forever be the rival to Yugi Muto, or more accurately, the Pharaoh Atem. Not even the afterlife could get in his way of dueling the Pharaoh.
His efforts and technology have led Duel Monsters into the future, even being the one to help manifest the alien Duel Monsters that would help save the world with a certain Duel Academy student, a Duel Academy he himself would create. There is but one man capable of doing such impossible things; Seto Kaiba.
Experience & Skill
Vegeta
Vegeta as a warrior has been training since he was a child. He was already born with a rather large power level for a Saiyan baby and has been shown decimating Saibamen since he was just a boy. He is one the greatest martial artists in the universe, regularly out performing and keeping up with some of the greatest, like his rival or many of the other Z-Fighters.
As an "Elite", Vegeta is considered among the best of Saiyans back when Planet Vegeta was still around, he even knew how to control and even speak as a Great Ape, something that was very rare amongst the Saiyan race.
As one example, Vegeta was able to accurately perceive Jiren's attacks when fighting Goku, and as such was able to perfectly move between them and actually land impactful hits.
Vegeta is also someone who has trained not only has body, but his mind, as shown with him meditating on Beerus' planet. He even uses this mindset to defeat Goku 1-on-1 in base. Also, while he does often have to pick up on what Goku himself figured out, Vegeta has mastered transformations such as Super Saiyan, not needing to use the extra grades. He even figured out how to properly use Destruction Energy, something Goku couldn't even properly do, and Vegeta is a candidate for next God of Destruction.
Kaiba
Kaiba is one of the greatest Duelists in the world, having remained champion for a long time until battling Yugi. Despite his aggressive play style, Kaiba always has a plan, and is great at adapting when things don't go his way. Several card combos in his Deck employ specific strategies in order to further his board state, whether it's to hamper his opponent's deck or get his higher star monsters out easier. Outside of Yugi, the only ones who Kaiba has lost to use an unfair advantage, such as Pegasus using his Millennium Eye or Noah using Mokuba as a human shield.
In general, Kaiba is a genius, being able to create entire virtual realities and technology when only a child. He was the one who invented the Duel Monsters holograms and the Duel Disk after all.
Even outside of Duel Monsters, Kaiba is extremely athletic, able to toss his brother up to a helicopter and then jump to it himself, as well as being able to jam guns by just tossing a card into it's hammer, and even take a remote out of someone's hand by throwing a card.
Equipment
Vegeta
Senzu Beans
Whenever Vegeta is in a pinch, he usually has a Senzu Bean or two to help heal him. Not only do they make you full for 10 whole days, they also heal all injuries, bring you back to peak physical performance, and can even potentially regrow lost limbs.
Vegeta can also divide up these Senzu Beans, although whether or not this weakens the amount they heal is up to interpretation.
Kaiba
Communicator
Yep! Apparently that logo on Kaiba's outfit isn't just a logo but a communicator.
Duel Disk
An innovation created by Kaiba himself, instead of playing Duel Monsters by cards alone at a table or at a Duel Arena, the Duel Disk allowed you to play the game anywhere, using Solid Vision to make the cards real. In the manga Kaiba created Duel Disks in order to combat Pegasus' mind reading as they would not have to be face to face. These also apparently stimulate combat damage to the user, though not at a lethal level.
The most recent design of Kaiba's Duel Disk has it so he is no longer required to use a physical Deck, as the Solid Vision connects to Kaiba's memories via a neural link allowing virtual reproductions of all of his cards to be used, coming with a virtual headset that allows the user to see these virtual cards in hand and their stats.
Solid Vision
Kaiba was capable of creating solid holograms for the game of Duel Monsters, built into all Duel Disks. These holograms are so potent that they can even replicate the effects of one of Yami Yugi's Penalty Game's, the Experience of Death, which causes the victim to be subjected to an illusion of being killed by the Duel Monsters, which reportedly made one of Kaiba's test subjects go insane after just 10 minutes.
Deck
Physical or not, Kaiba is never without his Deck. While Kaiba does have his own briefcase full of cards, we'll only be going over the ones he's actually shown to have used. I'll also be saving the most notable stuff for later sections (so you won't see Blue-Eyes here). I also won't be mentioning how many specific copies of a card Kaiba has as without a proper full Decklist (considering the sheer amount of cards Kaiba runs as well as him changing his Deck around throughout the series) we don't know for sure how many of each card he runs, and even then it matters more that he has the card in the first place rather than how many of it. Kaiba's Deck consists of...

Blue-Eyes Archetype
Easily the most recognizable cards used by Kaiba are the Blue-Eyes monsters, he runs 3 of the titular monster after all. It's so popular it's got it's own section!

You can banish this card from your GY; add 1 "Burst Stream of Destruction" from your Deck to your hand."
Rage with Eyes of Blue - "Banish this card, and as many cards as possible from your hand, field, and GY, face-down, and if you do, Special Summon up to 3 copies of "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" from your Deck. Anime Effect: "Once per Duel, if you have "Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon" in your Extra Deck, this card can attack 3 times. While this card is in your Graveyard, "Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon" you control cannot be targeted, and is unaffected, by your opponent's card effects."
Real Card Game Effect: "At the end of the Damage Step, if this Fusion Summoned card attacked, and this is the only face-up card you control: You can send 1 "Blue-Eyes" Fusion Monster from your Extra Deck to the GY; this card can attack again in a row. You can use this effect of "Neo Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon" twice per turn. When a card or effect is activated that targets a "Blue-Eyes" monster(s) you control (Quick Effect): You can banish this card from your GY; negate the activation, and if you do, destroy that card."
Blue-Eyes Twin Burst Dragon (3000 ATK/2500 DEF) - "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" + "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" "Must be either Fusion Summoned, or Special Summoned by sending the above monsters you control to the GY. Once per turn, when an effect of a card in the GY is activated (Quick Effect): You can negate the activation. (Quick Effect): You can Tribute this Synchro Summoned card; Special Summon 1 LIGHT Dragon Synchro Monster from your Extra Deck in Defense Position, except "Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon", but destroy it during the End Phase of this turn."
Azure-Eyes Silver Dragon (2500 ATK/3000 DEF) - "1 Tuner + 1+ non-Tuner Normal Monsters" "If this card is Special Summoned: Until the end of the next turn, neither player can target Dragon monsters you currently control with card effects, also they cannot be destroyed by card effects. Once per turn, during your Standby Phase: You can target 1 Normal Monster in your GY; Special Summon it."
Blue-Eyes Jet
Because of course he has this.
(Did you know they turned this into a real card?)
Abilities
Vegeta
Saiyan Physiology
Saiyans in Dragon Ball aren't just natural born fighters due to being born in a warrior race, their own bodies give them an advantage. Growing up on a planet 10x Earth's gravity has made them way more resilient, and in general are naturally gifted in using Ki for attacks. Saiyans are so tough they can even survive the vacuum of space!
They also have an incredible power boost built in to them, as when taking severe damage and healing, they get a significant boost in power known as a Zenkai.
Ki Control
Ki is a natural life force seen in all living beings. People, plants, animals, the water, even the planet itself. Controlling Ki takes a lot of.. well control but as previously established, Saiyans are naturals at using it.
Vegeta has even learned how to sense the Ki in other people.
Ki Techniques
Vegeta can form his Ki into energy attacks in order to fire it at enemies. His notable ones include:
Flight: Vegeta is capable of flying using Ki.
Galick Gun: A straightforward purple beam Vegeta fires from both hands.
Galaxy Breaker: Vegeta charges energy all throughout his body and fires it as a beam. He used this to kill Nappa.
Tail Slicer: I-It's just a Destructo Disc but with a different name.
Super Explosive Wave: Vegeta explodes a large amount of energy from his body.
Dirty Fireworks: Vegeta aims in the air and explodes an enemy with his fingers. Look at those fireworks.
Lucora Gun: It's Vegeta's Technique™!
Big Bang Attack: Vegeta aims with one hand as he fires a big ball of energy at the enemy. It seems robots can feel fear.
Final Flash: Arguably Vegeta's most iconic technique next to the Galick Gun, it's a super powerful laser that's shot from both arms straight forward.
Maximum Flasher: A one-handed golden beam.
Final Impact: Vegeta concentrates energy in three of his fingers and fires a thin but powerful beam.
Final Explosion: An omni-directional explosion from all of Vegeta's power. It used to be fatal but he's since learned how to survive it.
Cosmic Circle: Similar to Piccolo's Hellzone Grenade, he shots a bunch of Ki blasts surrounding the enemy before bringing them all in to enclose the opponent.
Heat Dome Attack: A technique he actually stole from his son, Vegeta raises his arms in the air and shot a large beam straight up. He used this against Beerus in the manga.
Gamma Burst Flash: Similar to a Final Flash but fired differently. He seems to use this technique everywhere except in the anime.
Spirit Sword: Vegeta releases a sword of pure energy from one of his arms. Usually used while fused with his rival as Vegito, but he did use it to save himself while in the manga's version of the Tournament of Power.
God Ki
After training with his rival and Whis, Vegeta learned how to use the power of a god's energy. Not only can it not be sensed by mortals, it's also shown to be more powerful. It also apparently possesses healing qualities. It should be noted that rather than the anger and pressure of the regular Super Saiyan, God Ki's transformations (like Super Saiyan God) offer much more control.
Spirit Control
On the planet Yardrat, Vegeta learned a style of using techniques, Spirit Control. This took a bit to master but it proved worthwhile in the end, as the user learns to reshape their soul for a variety of techniques.
Instant Transmission
Vegeta is capable of taking a page from Goku's book and is able to use Instant Transmission in order to effectively teleport. He does this by entering a "Teleportation Zone" and this process is... well instant.
It has been stated that Vegeta didn't want to rely on this technique and would only use it for emergency last resorts.
Cloning
Vegeta is capable of using Spirit Control to clone himself. While this does come from a gag panel, Forced Spirit Fission is considered a more advanced technique of Spirit Control so it's not out of the realm of possibility for Vegeta to know it anyway.
Size Altering
yo no way it's the same image
Vegeta is capable of using Spirit Control to change his size. While this does come from a gag panel, Forced Spirit Fission is considered a more advanced technique of Spirit control so it's not out of the possibility for Vegeta to know it anyway.
Forced Spirit Fission
By hitting the opponent, Vegeta can split them of any energy they originally did not possess, whether they have absorbed it from someone else, or have fused with someone, like with using the Fusion Dance or even Namekian fusion.
Vegeta can choose to either disperse this energy or form it all into one giant ball. He used this to help with Goku's Spirit Bomb.
Destruction Energy
Beyond even God Ki lies an energy exclusive to those of Gods of Destruction. Destruction Energy, also known as Hakai, completely erases the opponent on a physical, spiritual, and temporal level, although it can be blocked if the opponent is strong enough.
It's also stated by Beerus that he cannot kill an immortal being so it seems it also cannot work on those who are immortal as well (at least by what the Super Dragon Balls deem as immortality)
Resistances
Extreme Temperatures: Dragon Ball characters regularly survive the cold reaches of space, absolute zero, or heat as hot as lava.
Empathy Manipulation: Lots of the stronger fighters (including Vegeta) were unaffected by Ribrianne’s aroma, which normally distracts targets by making them filled with love.
Extrasensory Perception: Those with God Ki cannot be sensed by regular Ki sensing.
Mental Manipulation: As seen in the above image, Vegeta was able to resist Babidi's mind control. In fact the only reason Babidi got his magic to work on him in the first place was because Vegeta let Babidi do it.
Spatial Manipulation and Durability Negation: Can tank attacks from Janemba’s sword and Goku Black’s scythe, both of which could cut through time and space.
Intangibility: Goku's Ki can block Ki attacks from Hit which phase through objects. Vegeta should be able to do the same.
Hakai: Vegeta has straight up shown the ability to punch through Hakai from Toppo, although it does depend on how strong the actual Hakai is if Vegeta can overpower it.
Radiation: Upper Earth's atmosphere has large amounts of radiation. Characters like Vegeta can fight up there just fine.
BFR: Characters such as Super Buu, Gotenks and even Vegeta have broken out of alternate dimensions just by powering up. Vegeta also has access to Instant Transmission.
Time Manipulation: Characters like Jiren are able to walk through time stops due to their sheer strength.
Pressure Point Strikes: Goku was able to get past Granolah's pressure point strikes by strengthening his body and moving his organs. Vegeta should be able to do the same.
Gravity Manipulation: Goku was able to get past Gas' gravity spell. Vegeta should be capable of the same.
Illusion Creation: Goku is able to sense the real Moro even with his illusions up. Vegeta should be able to do the same.
Kaiba
Genius Intellect
Kaiba is one of the smartest people in the world of Yu-Gi-Oh, capable of creating entire virtual worlds when he was only just a boy. He is the one after all to create Solid Vision and plenty of KaibaCorp's other pieces of technology.
Egyptian Reincarnation
Due to being the reincarnation Preist Seto, one of the Pharaoh Atem's Sacred Guardians and the one to take over as Pharaoh after Atem, Kaiba is capable of having control over ancient Egyptian magic.
He unconsciously used Marik's Millennium Rod multiple times, betraying Marik's command, as Priest Seto was the original user of the Millenium Rod. While Kaiba himself does not have this Millenium item, his Egyptian and Pharaoh heritage does give him control of other things, including....
Obelisk the Tormentor
“It’s no monster… it’s a god!”
Obelisk the Tormentor is one of the three Egyptian God cards that served under the Pharaoh's rule, having 4000 ATK/4000 DEF. Despite no longer having the physical or even digital card in his Deck, Kaiba is capable of summoning Obelisk due to his Pharaonic past life. The God cards are so powerful that they would instantly kill or drive anyone mad if they played counterfeit versions. It is also shown to be unaffected by all Spells, Traps, and Monster effects that target it, like the other two God cards, usually with only Spells affecting them for a turn at most.
Obelsik specifically has the effect of sacrificing two monsters to destroy all the opponent's monsters and deal 4000 damage, with sometimes Obelisk gaining "infinite attack". [See Before the Verdict]

Transformations
Vegeta
Super Saiyan
That's right! The prince of all Saiyans has unlocked the legendary form of Super Saiyan! This form gives him a 50x boost. He unlocked this form after training from planet to planet after seeing his rival attain the form.
Super Vegeta
Technically still the original Super Saiyan form, but this time a different "grade" of it. With Super Saiyan Grade 2, Vegeta increases his muscle mass and power. Grade 3 increases his power even further but the sheer extra muscle mass of it slows the user down significantly. Vegeta has learned how to master the original Super Saiyan form, making the grades practically obsolete.
Super Saiyan 2
After witnessing Gohan transform into this state back during the Cell Games, Vegeta trained hard enough to achieve this form. This form is twice as powerful as the original Super Saiyan at a 100x increase.
Super Saiyan 3
YES! After all these years Vegeta has canonically achieved the legendary Super Saiyan 3 (thank you Daima). It offers a 400x boost, but absolutely burns through Ki, usually only being able to be used for a short time. It also seems to cut time limits short as both Gotenks' Fusion time limit and Goku's time limit being back from the afterlife were cut short via Super Saiyan 3.
Super Saiyan God
After training with Whis, Vegeta learned how to use God Ki, and as such, can tap into the Super Saiyan God transformation, way more powerful than the previous stages. This form is usually used for evasion and dodging, often transforming into Super Saiyan Blue at the last minute for increased damage.
Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan
Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan or Super Saiyan Blue (god both of those names suck) is essentially turning Super Saiyan while in the state of Super Saiyan God.
Perfected Super Saiyan Blue
Less of a different transformation and more mastery of the form in general, Vegeta and his rival have learned to use Super Saiyan Blue at its peak, although it does take lots of concentration and it is risky to do.
Super Saiyan Blue Evolution
Vegeta would break his limits during the Tournament of Power and achieve this form in the fight against Jiren. It was considered on par with Goku using Kaioken while in Super Saiyan Blue.
Ultra Ego
Vegeta's current pinnacle and considered to be the counterpart to Goku's Ultra Instinct, this transformation is all ego. While Ultra Instinct is all about dodging and attacking at an open opportunity, this transformation is specifically based around Vegeta's power, as whenever he gets damaged Vegeta's strength grows. This form also allows Vegeta to fully utilize Destruction Energy.
Water Vegeta
Water Vegeta is a form of Vegeta that he is able to take whenever he is in water. In this form he turns bluer and his eyes go blank, he can move at high speeds through the water, and breath underwater. He only uses it once - during his battle with Recoome. His power level increases by 1.
Kaiba
None lol
He's just a normal fucking guy
Feats
Vegeta
Overall
Considered Goku's greatest rival.
Achieved the legendary Super Saiyan form, as well as it's sequels and god versions.
Helped Goku and the rest of Universe 7 win the Tournament of Power.
Got a family.
Was deemed a candidate for God of Destruction.
One of few beings in the multiverse to actually utilize Destruction Energy.
Technically never lost a true 1v1 against Goku.
Power
Said he would destroy the Earth with his Galick Gun.
The explosion of Vegeta’s Final Burst Cannon was said to be many times greater than Planet Namek itself.
Alongside Goku, Vegeta affected the World of Void and destroyed most of the arena.
Destroyed the Hyperbolic Time Chamber from the inside, an entire separate realm with its own time and space, simply by powering up.
Speed
Dodged lasers in base form while under 150 times gravity.
Claimed to be able to fly from West City to Heracleopolis in five seconds and arrived there just after Goku’s Instant Transmission. (Mach 3800 - 9400)
Durability
Survived Goku's Kaioken x4 Kamehameha...
...and the Spirit Bomb...
...and Great Ape Gohan falling on him (Vegeta in the Saiyan Saga was just unkillable man.)
Was fine being in the epicenter of Nappa’s city destroying attack. (51.9 teratons of TNT)
Took a kick from Super Saiyan 2 Goku that created a giant impact while in Super Saiyan 2 form.
Took multiple attacks from Majin Buu.
Survived a flurry of Katchin, which is the hardest material in the Dragon Ball universe.
Got his shit rocked by Beerus which made this crater.
Kaiba
Overall
Considered the greatest rival to the Pharaoh Atem and Yugi Muto.
Collected 3 out of the 4 Blue-Eyes White Dragons in the world.
Is the current CEO of one of the richest companies in the world; KaibaCorp.
Pegasus, the creator of Duel Monsters, considered him the 2nd best Duelist besides Yugi.
Power
[Kaiba]
[Blue-Eyes Cards]
Destroys an orbital space station.
[Obelisk the Tormentor]
Obelisk gains "infinite attack" with its effect. (High Universal) [See Before the Verdict]
Punches through a Mirror Force.
Creates a storm (Large Town Level)
Speed
Durability
Endures Duels where the damage taken is real.
Scaling
(all images in this section made by me)
Vegeta
Z-Villains
Vegeta has been well above all of the villains that were fought in Dragon Ball Z. The only exception being Frieza in his Black form but he hasn't presented any new feats unusable for Vegeta to scale too.
First Form Freeza destroyed Planet Vegeta. (4.9 quettatons of TNT)
Frieza destroyed the Earth (because he’s a sore loser just take the L bro.)
Perfect Cell stated he could destroy the Solar System, and shook the universe.
Kid Buu was stated to be a threat to the universe.
Kid Buu destroyed the Earth.
Super-Villains (and Jiren)
At the current point in the timeline, Vegeta should be above or on par with any of the feats performed by the characters in Dragon Ball Super.
Goku Black created a rift in reality with his scythe.
Zamasu and Goku Black destroyed the Super Dragon Balls.
Infinite Zamasu merged with the universe, and was capable of affecting multiple different timelines. (36 times Universal at minimum, and possibly Immeasurable)
Fusion Zamasu was reacting to and trying to escape Zeno’s attack which was literally erasing Trunks’s timeline. (Possibly Immeasurable)
Zeno would later be unable to perceive Dyspo's speed without slow-mo, supporting the immeasurable scaling.
Jiren shakes the world of Void.
Gas flew across the universe in 20 minutes (66.7 billion c)
Goku
Vegeta's main rival and equal, everything Goku has done, Vegeta should be able to do as well.
Shook the Earth while transforming into Super Saiyan 3, his Ki being so great it was felt from Otherworld
Absorbed energy from across the universe for his Spirit Bomb against Kid Buu (100.2 - 489.2 quadrillion c, potentially Infinite speed)
Clashed with Beerus- you know the fucking feat. (365 - 1755 times universal) (Low Multiversal)
SHOCKWAVES- (358 quadrillion - 507 sextillion c, possibly infinite speed)
Kaiba
Zorc
Now Kaiba and his monsters obviously shouldn't be comparable to full-power Zorc, but his strongest monsters should at least be somewhat comparable to his feats.
Zorc creates a solar eclipse (Mach 1293.5)
GX Era Characters
Despite Kaiba himself never interacting with the group, the GX characters should be
similar to him in power. Yugi himself battled Jaden in a practically equal Duel and Dark Magacian, a card Kaiba's monsters should definitely scale too, are depicted as equal to Elemental HERO Neos.
Amnael moves planets with a Spell card (492.72 Tenatons of TNT, Star Level)
Neo-Spacians descend from Neo Space when summoned (865 c) (btw special thanks to Rina for both of these calcs!)
Yubel was going to merge 12 dimensions with Super Polymerization. (Low Multiversal)
Weaknesses
Vegeta
Vegeta is... well Vegeta. The only thing bigger than his own power level is his ego. He has a nasty habit of being overconfident in his own abilities and then promptly eating shit for it. He has gotten better with this, and has recently been more cautious in how strong his opponents are but, cards on the table, expect Vegeta to hype himself up and then immediately come crashing down.
Ki is also not limitless and Vegeta can burn through it rather quickly if not careful. The Tournament of Power lasted around an hour and Vegeta was exhausted after it.
Kaiba
For as great as a duelist Kaiba is, there's a reason why he's only 2nd best. Outside of duels when using his Deck outide of Duel Monsters, he tends to try and go with his monsters rather than try and use his spells and traps. He obviously does have strategy, he's a genius who beat a World Champion at Chess as just a child, and Crush Card Virus is a strategy he often employs, but usually his first instinct is try and blast something with his Blue-Eyes.
He also often does not consider the opponent interrupting his plays, like using his Ring of Destruction or Crush Card Virus against him.
Before the Verdict
Aren't The Duel Monsters Just Holograms?
Let's just get this out of the way. Yes, while the Duel Monsters are commonly perceived as holograms for most of the show, there are instances where Kaiba is able to make them real. Whether in the Virtual World, Waking the Dragons arc, or in other circumstances. In the Pyramid of Light movie they even stand on them so the holograms must be more physical than just simple holograms. It's literally called Solid Vision after all.
Applying card games rules to a fight
Of course, given that Kaiba is able to make his cards real, we also have to apply Yu-Gi-Oh mechanics to the fight as well, which leads to some interesting debacles. Like what's a Main Phase and Battle Phase in this context? Or what happens when Kaiba tries to tribute Vegeta with Soul Exchange? People can barely figure out how to resolve Last Turn in real life how does it even function here?!
When it comes to effects that destroy or banish a monster regardless of strength, I think it'd be a bit of a No Limits Fallacy to assume they'd instantly destroy Vegeta, at least when it comes to generic destruction effects. So no, a single Raigeki Break isn't going to completely wash Vegeta.
It should also be stated that outside of Duels, Kaiba seems to be able to just summon and attack whenever he wants, like in the Waking the Dragons arc.
For the purposes of this blog Vegeta will be treated mainly as a duelist that can be affected by card effects, with anything that Vegeta “summons” (like his clones) being treated as Vegeta’s monsters.
Infinite ATK Points?
During the Duel against Yami Marik, Yugi uses the effect of Obelisk, with him gaining "infinite power". Surely this isn't legitimate though, right?
Well… there isn’t really anything against it not being legit.
Normally flowery language like “infinite power” isn’t very reliable but considering we see Obelisk’s power numerically rise to infinity, there really isn’t anything to go against it. This is also a consistent ability of Obelisk, it uses this effect again in both R and the 2016 Live Duel with Yugi.
Verdict
Stats
For being two of the most iconic rivals of shonen anime, how do they physically stack up to each other? Well when it comes to pure strength, Vegeta takes the edge against all of Kaiba’s monsters. While both sit comfortably in the Low Multiversal category, Vegeta’s output is way more, with the Universe 7 shockwaves eclipsing the 12 dimensions Yubel was going to fuse no matter the end. And the Yubel feat should only really apply to Obelisk and maybe Blue-Eyes, All his other monsters? Essentially fodder in terms of stats.
Durability is a similar boat and as for speed… even ignoring the infinite ends for Vegeta, he’s leagues faster than the 865c feat Kaiba has, with the fastest calculable amount being 507 Sextillion c.
Arsenal & Abilities
As for their actual abilities, Kaiba has a huge numbers advantage on Vegeta with all of his monsters, although that largely doesn’t matter with Vegeta’s overwhelming strength, and the fact that Vegeta can easily clear them away with his large AOE Ki attacks. Kaiba does have some monsters that can stop Vegeta from being able to attack, like Invitation to a Dark Sleep, or ways of cloning Vegeta like… well Cloning. But Vegeta is able to counter these by making his own clones with Spirit Control, having his clones attack instead of himself, or outnumbering Kaiba’s clone. Sure Kaiba could always tribute these clones with Soul Exchange but Vegeta can just… make more. Kaiba also has cards that can weaken Vegeta, like Shrink, but these debuffs are likely not enough to significantly weaken Vegeta enough to get a stat advantage. And while Kaiba can make Vegeta attack himself like with Magic Cylinder or the Metal Fiend from Fiend’s Sanctuary, Vegeta should definitely be capable of tanking one of his own attacks. There is one thing Kaiba has though… Crush Card Virus.
Yeah, Crush Card is something that would definitely kill Vegeta. Saiyans have already shown to be affected by heart viruses and this one explicitly goes after strong monsters. So yes this could be a way Kaiba could kill Vegeta.
But… Vegeta has his own ways of winning. Mainly just blasting Kaiba directly with one of his Ki attacks, which he could very easily do with his higher speed. As a smart fighter, Vegeta would also likely know to target Kaiba directly as the source of the summoning, and would probably figure out to destroy Kaiba’s duel disk, as that leaves him without his main way of fighting. Vegeta’s flight is also largely useful for maneuverability and keeping distance from Kaiba’s monsters, as well as being able to just throw Kaiba into space. As for Forced Spirit Fission, Vegeta could easily just get rid of any of Kaiba’s fusion monsters, getting rid of some of his strongest monsters.
And then… there’s Hakai. Hakai is… complicated, but considering characters like Frieza can just overpower it, or not get erased even when it overpowers him like with Toppo, I’m gonna assume Kaiba and his more powerful monsters can resist it.
Tertiary Factors
Vegeta has trained a lot longer than Kaiba has, as well as being much older. He possesses better battle IQ due to… y’know actually being in more physical fights. Kaiba on the other hand is much generally smarter, able to create entire virtual worlds, security systems, and knowledge on hacking, and with him being one the greatest players of Chess and Duel Monsters. That last one might not sound the best, but… well he is using his Deck, and so having obscene knowledge on his own Deck means he’ll likely know how to efficiently take out Vegeta if he can, in this case using Crush Card.
So Vegeta’s battle IQ and Kaiba’s general IQ should balance out, with probably an edge to Kaiba. However, with Kaiba’s Deck having… a lot of cards to say the least, it’s possible he won’t immediately go for it and instead try and brute force his way at first.
Summary
Vegeta
Advantages:
Takes the stat trinity.
Ki attacks can take out a large majority of monsters.
Cloning can get past ways of negating Vegeta’s ability to attack or Kaiba cloning Vegeta himself.
Resists Kaiba being able to mind hax him with Brain Control or Change of Heart.
Forced Spirit Fission completely invalidates Kaiba’s fusion monsters.
Multiple ways of completely taking Kaiba out such as destroying his Duel Disk or sending him into space.
Christopher Sabat.
Unlike Kaiba, actually beat his rival legit.
Disadvantages:
Can be killed by Crush Card Virus.
Hakai is essentially worthless.
5’4 VS 6’1
“Vegeta has never been one to misread an opponent’s strength.”
Kaiba
“For him… the Pharaoh… take it… bring him back Yugi. ”
Advantages:
Absurdly high numbers advantage.
Many cards that can slow down Vegeta…
Has a reliable wincon in Crush Card Virus…
Edge in general intelligence.
Has monsters that can’t be destroyed…
Resists Hakai.
Eric Stuart.
Disadvantages:
Weaker in all stats.
…but not many that can keep Vegeta down.
…but likely to not be the first strategy he goes for.
…but Vegeta can just go around them and aim directly for Kaiba.
No options against Vegeta blitzing and obliterating him.
Ultimately, while Kaiba did put up a good fight, him and his monsters were simply not enough for the pure might that the Prince of all Saiyan brings.
The winner is Vegeta.
Closing Thoughts
Hi, I’m Oddmegaman. You might remember me from… the beginning of the blog (I know it’s been such a long time.) The blog making process for this matchup… was hell. Yu-Gi-Oh as a series is already fairly under researched, but having to put down literally every single one of Kaiba’s cards (I probably missed one knowing my luck) was a process. Even worse… this blog was a nightmare for Blogger. Things just wouldn’t format properly, and one time when porting this thing over to Google Docs as a backup… I ended up accidentally deleting everything I had on Blogger.
Thankfully I had mostly everything saved on the Doc but not everything… mostly the formatting and Transformations section.
For anyone who wants to make Blogs, please do everything on Google Docs first before porting it to Blogger.
Anyway I still love this matchup and would go through this entire process again for it.
Next time will probably be DIO VS Salem idk I’m tired.
I thought it was gonna be DBH Vegeta and they were gonna have an actual card battle.
ReplyDeleteBut I like this too!
I already had to include all the cards for Kaiba, if I had to do the same for Vegeta I'd probably spontaneously combust
Deletethats so real honestly
